Poole Pottery 1970's Atlantis Carved Helmet Lamp


A spectacular carved and glazed red earthenware Atlantis Helmet Lamp Base by Guy Sydenham and Beatrice Bolton.

Dating: 1972 - 1974

Shape: An 11½" (29cm) tall Helmet Lamp. This is shape number A12 in the Atlantis series.

Design: Atlantis pieces were made by the craft section under the supervision of Guy Sydenham from 1969. Each piece was thrown and decorated by the same potter in a studio environment. From 1972 the shapes were standardised to allow restocking by retailers.

Backstamp: Impressed "POOLE ENGLAND" on the base with a backstamp that has been in use since 1930.

Painter: Guy Sydenham was the legendary Poole Pottery thrower and designer who became the driving force of the 1960's and 1970's Studio, including launching the Atlantis range. He originally joined in 1946 and was instrumental in developing the iconic shapes of the 1950's onwards until his resignation in 1977. He continued working in his own studio potteries at Long Island, Green Island and Portland until his death in 2005.

Condition: Excellent condition. Sold as decorative piece only.
