Poole Pottery 1950's Freeform Vase


A hand-thrown white earthenware vase from the Freeform period painted with an Alfred Read 1950's contemporary design on alpine white glaze.

Dating: 1955 - 1957

Shape: A 7½" (19cm) tall vase with a maximum diameter of 2½" (6cm) designed for hand throwing by Alfred Read and Guy Sydenham in 1954 - 1955. Impressed with shape number 706.

Design: Decorated with pattern PJB, an Alfred Read contemporary design from 1954 and produced until 1957. It features bracken coloured bands over glacier blue rectangles.

Backstamp: Printed "POOLE ENGLAND" on the base together with the Poole dolphin. Backstamp 39 was used between 1955 and 1959.

Painter: Signed with a monogram by the paintress Pat Dightam, who worked at Poole from 1953-1958.

Condition: Excellent oriignal condition, with a few minor pattern defects. Unusually, there is a second paintress mark X, which is that of paint shop supervisor Gwen Haskins.
