Poole Pottery 1950's Freeform Vase


A hand-thrown white earthenware vase from the freeform period, with a simple but effective grey striped Alfred Read design on alpine white glaze.

Dating: 1953 - 1955

Shape: An 8" (20cm) tapered vase designed for hand-throwing by Claude Smale and Guy Sydenham around 1953. Stamped to base with shape number 685.

Design: Decorated with contemporary pattern YBC, one of Alfred Read's earliest designs from 1953. Painted in soluble colours of Charcoal on Alpine White with a Terracotta highlight.

Backstamp: Printed "HAND MADE, HAND DECORATED" and "POOLE ENGLAND" on the base together with the Poole dolphin. This backstamp was used between 1952 and 1955.

Painter: Signed X by the paintress Gwen Haskins, who worked at Poole from 1938 - 1977 and was senior paintress from the 1950's

Condition: Excellent original condition
