A large hand-thrown white earthenware vase from the freeform period, with an elaborate Alfred Read organic pattern on alpine white glaze.

Dating: 1953 - 1955

Shape: A 9½" (24cm) tapered vase designed for hand-throwing by Claude Smale and Guy Sydenham around 1953. Stamped to base with shape number 686.

Design: Decorated with an organic contemporary pattern YFI, designed by Alfred Read in 1953 during the Freeform period. The pattern features a flowing leaf design in Purbeck Grey glaze with Lemon highlights and was produced until 1958.

Backstamp: Printed "HAND MADE, HAND DECORATED" and "POOLE ENGLAND" on the base together with the Poole dolphin. This backstamp was used between 1952 and 1955.

Painter: Signed with a monogram by the paintress Jean Cockram, who worked at Poole from 1945 - 1957.

Condition: Excellent condition.
